The celebration of the Carnival in Sitges is hugely popular since 1976. The Sitges Carnival as we know it today is the most famous and crowded carnival of Catalonia. A week of celebration where every single “sitgetans” actively participates and keeps it as tradition that has been handed down for generations. Our carnival is a real effort made by the locals, the preparation involves many hours of work for the construction of the coaches that have different themes each year. The costumes and the masks are often designed and created by the participants themselves with many hours of work and the dance routine are being practiced for at least 2 months before date.
Rivers and streams of people following the King and Queen of Carnival and the beat of the 2,500 participants from 50 colorful coaches along the streets of Sitges. There are songs that everybody can sing along, It’s a great chance to party for free, make new friends, mingle with locals, just a wonderful feeling!
Foreigners often ask us where this tradition comes from and it might be forgotten but the Carnival is a religious event from Christianity. The history of the carnival goes back many centuries throughout the world, and of course, in Sitges, where the first document on record of a Carnival of Sitges is dated in the fifteenth century!
But what happens when a combination of factors make an experience just perfect ? Yoga for the body, relaxation for the mind, spectacular views to the mountains of the Garraf, gorgeous scent of lavender and pine, lovely company mostly of ladies, homemade fresh and healthy food and the outstanding location has given a magical touch to the whole experience!
I must say that despite my little practice with the yoga, I have found an excellent understanding with Jo, the teacher, she offers yoga classes in English, she has an incredible devotion for what she does and is able to transmit a beautiful energy. I manage to breath, relax, stretch and feel a human being again. Also with the help of Selma, that has been assisting during the course as well.
Jo teaches in Sitges during the week with group sessions but mostly privately, you can check out her Facebook page, Now Be Yoga .
